Historical Pirkkala

Old Pirkkala

Up to now it has been supposed that there was population in the Pirkkala area as early as the Iron Age. During the last few years, however, there have been significant archaeological findings of a Stone Age population dating from 5000 BC.

The name of the parish of Pirkkala is recorded for the first time in written sources as late as 1374. In 1922 the municipality began its modern local self-government as Southern Pirkkala situated in the area south of Lake Pyhäjärvi.

The Birch of Pirkkala

In 1862 a special variety of birch, the birch of Pirkkala (Betula pendula f. bircalensis) was found by scientists as a new subspecies in Pirkkala. The lobed leaf of the birch of Pirkkala has become one of the symbols of Pirkkala. There is a nature reserve belonging to the conservation programme "Natura" in Pirkkala.

The Municipal Centre

The present municipal centre of Pirkkala developed only after the Second World War. The vicinity of Tampere has substantially left its marks on the development of the municipal centre.

The atmosphere of the centre is youthful, but its traditions are represented by an old farm with stalls and horses. This estate with the manege has belonged to the same family for over five centuries. The facilities of the municipal centre are developing as the population grows.
